Second Lieutenant M. Stewart, USMCR, was designated Naval Aviator #778 in 1918. Served in Europe during the World War. Discharged from the service in 1919 with the rank of Captain. A well-known Galveston businessman and philanthropist, Stewart suffered a fatal heart attack while driving home from a social gathering.

Stewart married Miss Virginia Kirkland (the first of three wives) in 1928, and they had two children. They were divorced by 1936.
