"Death of the Venerable Mrs. Margaret B. Bair.
Mrs. Mary B. Bair, widow of David Bair, who died in 1876, died at her residence, East King street, at 7:30 Tuesday morning, after a lingering illness, aged 83 years. She has been more or less of an invalid for 7 years, and for the past three years had been confined to her room.
Mrs. Bair was, before marriage, Miss Margaret Buckwalter, a daughter of David and Susan Buckwalter, of East Lampeter township, where she was born on April 6, 1805. In December, 1828, she was united in marriage to David Bair, and they became residents of Lancaster in 18?8. Mr. Bair became known as one of our most prominent dry goods merchants, and afterwards, in partnership with the late Major R. W. Shenk, engaged in the banking business in Centre Square, under the firm name of Bair & Shenk, the firm title having remained the same for sometime after Mr. Bair's death through Mrs. Bair's interest in the business. Mrs. Bair was a familiar figure in our city, and she will be greatly missed. She died childless, but Mrs. R. W. Shenk was her niece and seemed a daughter, having lived with the deceased from childhood. Mr. David Bair Shenk, a grand-nephew, was also a member of the good old lady's immediate family, in the well-known Bair mansion on East King street. The funeral took place on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with interment at Woodward Hill Cemetery."
