Phillip died during the Civil War near Sidney, Lawrence County, Missouri when JayHawker guerillas came to his farm and demanded money and valuables. When he could not produce the money they suspected he had, he was hung before the eyes of his family. Still alive when they cut him down, he died minutes later. In 1990, his tombstone was still in this cemetery although broken.
