While Officer Early was inside of the tavern a man entered and ordered everyone to put their hands up. Officer Early attempted to strike the man with his nightstick but missed. The man then turned and shot him several times in the abdomen.
Officer Early was able to make it to a police call box and summoned for help. He gave a description of the suspect, who was later arrested, before succumbing to his wounds.
Officer Early had been with the Saint Louis Metropolitan Police Department for 21 years.
His wake was held at Harrigan & Sheehan Livery & Undertaking Company, Stable No. 1, 718 No. Kingshighway.
Interment was at the St. Patrick's Cemetery in Catawissa Missouri on 07/29/1924.
