Gary was the son of Helen R. Burton of Fruitland Park, Florida. His father was Kenneth Lyle Burton. He graduated from Leesburg High School, Leesburg, Florida, and from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, Virginia in 1970. He interned at the Naval Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. At the time of his death, he was a well-known area physician and owner of Herndon-Reston Medical Center. He died in a fatal car accident. Apparently he fell asleep around 4:30 AM on Route 22 in Jackson Township, Cambria County, PA and his car crossed the center lane crashing headon into a tractor-trailer. He was pronounced dead on the scene due to massive head and chest trauma. It was reported that he had been in Chicago to pick up supplies for his medical clinic and had told friends that he planned to drive straight through to Reston.
