James O. Atkinson, Sr.
Dr. James O. Atkinson, Sr., Died Today Following Period Ill Health Over Three Years
Dr. James Oscar Atkinson, Sr., mission secretary of the Southern Christian convention and intimately associated with the development of Elon college during the past half century, died at 5:15 a. m., today at St. Leo's hospital, Greensboro, after a week's illness. He was 73 years of age.
In ill health for the past three years, Dr. Atkinson had retired from virtually all activities other than his mission secretaryship at the time of his death. He was reelected to that post recently in a church convention session held in Greensboro, to round out 23 years of service in that field.
One of the original members of the faculty at Elon college Dr. Atkinson had resided in the Elon community since 1890.
He was educated at Wake Forest college and Harvard university and received his D. D. degree from Elon prior to entering the ministry.
He served as dean of the faculty at Elon for two year from 1903-1905 and continued as a member of the faculty there until 1912, teaching in the social science department before leaving that position to assume his duties as mission board secretary of the Convention of Congregational and Christian churches.
At the time of his death Dr. Atkinson was a member of the college board of trustees, having been named to that body in 1912, and until 1934 was on the executive board. He had also served as a minister to the college for a number of years and was still retained as a lecturer to the school up to the time of his recent illness.
Dr. Atkinson was prominently mentioned in the "Who's Who in the Clergy" for his many activities in the religious an educational field, activities which included coauthor shop of the volume "Principles and Governments of the Christian Church'' and editorship of "The Christian Sun," official organ of the Southern Christian Convention.
The volume also noted the fact that he served several years as a trustee of the University of North Carolina and the North Carolina Institute for the Blind.
A native of Wake county Dr. Atkinson was a son of the late George Washington and Mary Jones Atkinson.
He is survived by his widow, the former Martha Emma Williamson; three daughters, Mrs. R. T. Bradford, Suffolk, Va., Mrs. W. E. McCardell, New Orleans, La., and Mrs. J. Davis Reed, Norfolk, Va.; one son J. O. Atkinson, Jr., Greensboro; one sister, Mrs. Mamie Davis; two brothers, E. B. Atkinson, Ashburn, Ga., and M. A. Atkinson, Elon College; two half-sisters, Mrs. Vivian Stephenson and Mrs. F. R. Smith, Raleigh, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services are to be held in the Whitley Auditorium tomorrow at 3 p.m., and interment will follow in Magnolia cemetery, Elon.
