He graduated in 1950 from Clayton High School and in 1955 from Buffalo State Teachers College. He taught in the Clayton school district from 1955 to 1956 and served in the Army from 1956 to 1958.
He married Dorothy Jean Watson on Aug. 31, 1957, at Holy Family Church, Watertown. The couple moved in 1958 to Canton, where he taught art in the junior-senior high school until 1966.
He received a master's degree in 1967 from St. Lawrence University, Canton, and worked for the Board of Cooperative Educational Services as a counselor at Knox Memorial Central School, Russell, and Edwards Central School from 1967 to 1969 and for Edwards-Knox Central School, Russell, from 1969 to 1979. He was guidance director at Morristown Central School from fall 1979 until retiring in June 1989. Mr. Hunt operated The Sign Shop at his home until 1996.
He was past president of Morristown Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Morristown Planning Board. He attended St. John the Evangelist Church, was a member of Ogdensburg Elks Lodge 772 and enjoyed boating and golf.
Mr. and Mrs. Hunt enjoyed their home overlooking the St. Lawrence River at Morristown from 1983 until 2002, when they moved to New Port Richey.
