US Senator. Born Samuel James Ervin, Jr.; a native of Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina. In 1917 he graduated from the University of North Carolina. He was also a 1922 Harvard Law School graduate. After leaving Harvard he then entered politics. He served as a Democratic United States Senator from North Carolina from 1954 until 1974. He served in World War I and was awarded two Purple Hearts, the Distinguished Service Cross, and the Silver Star. He made a deep impact on American History at the beginning of his career and at the end of his career. In 1954 he condemned the Brown v. Brown Board of Education Supreme Court decision calling for desegregation for schools. In 1974 The Senate Select Committee to Investigate Campaign Practices, which investigated Watergate (the scandal that destroyed Richard M. Nixon), was popularly known as the "Ervin Committee." His office and personal library "Senator Sam J. Ervin Jr. Library and Museum" is located in the Phifer Learning Resource Center at Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton, North Carolina..
