Joseph (Chick) Conrad Bender, the fifth oldest of the thirteen children born to Charles P. Bender and Frances P. Hittner, was born on September 4, 1910, near Cornlea, Nebraska. His family later lived for some time at Humphrey and Elgin, Nebraska, before coming back to Cornlea. It was in these communities that he grew up and received his education. Later on he went to Rock Island, Illinois, and worked in a foundry.

He was united in marriage to Veronica (Vernie) Ausdemore on January 7, 1946, in St. Joseph Church, Rock Island, Illinois. She was born on February 3, 1915, at Fordyce, Nebraska, the daughter of Joseph F. Ausdemore and Sophia Wichelman. Her family later moved to Cornlea, too.

To this union were born two sons:

Mr. and Mrs. Bender lived in Rock Island for a short period then settled in Omaha after their marriage. Mr. Bender became ill with Tuberculosis, and was taken to the Tuberculosis hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. There he died on April 14, 1957. He was buried from St. Ann Church, in Omaha and laid to rest in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Omaha, Nebraska.

Mrs. Bender continues to live in Omaha and worked at Peter Pan and Old Home Bakeries before she retired.

Vernie died on April 24, 2001, and was buried from St. Ann Church and laid to rest in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, on the east side, in Omaha
