Phyllis E. Mitchell, age 88, of Columbia City, Ind. passed away at 7:55 a.m., Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at her home. Born on September 29, 1922 in Columbia City, Ind., she was the daughter of Victor and Hazlette (Brubaker) Phend.

She lived most of her life in Whitley County, Ind. She attended Larwill High School graduating with the Class of 1940. On December 6, 1942, she married Walter E. Mitchell in Larwill, Ind. She was a housewife and mother and assisted with the family business, Mitchell's Bait and Tackle in Columbia City for over 20 years. She also worked for FerroMagnetic's for 4 years and at Blue Bell Factory for 2 years. She was a member of the Gospel Land Ministries, National Button Society, Indianapolis Post Card Club and the Findley Antique Bottle Club. She loved the Lord and had a very firm faith.

Survivors include her daughter, Katherine Anne (Richard) Ackley of Columbia City, Ind.; 2 sons, James Edward (Esmeralda) Mitchell of Upland, Cal. and Kevin Dale (Beverly) Mitchell of Columbia City, Ind.; 3 sisters, Patricia "Pat" Reiff of Warsaw, Virginia Wiseman of Columbia City, and Shirley Weber of Rockville, MD; 1 brother, William H. (Connie) Phend of Fort Wayne; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren, 4 step-great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild due in March of 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Walter E. Mitchell on May 30, 2006, sons, Patrick Allen Mitchell, 1948 and Michael E. Mitchell on May 26, 2007, and grandson, Michael W. Mitchell on October 22, 1963.

Visitation is from 3p.m. - 8p.m. Friday, December 10, 2010 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, Ind. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Chris Thurow to officiate. Burial will follow at Greenhill Cemetery, Columbia City. Memorials may be given in memory of Mrs. Mitchell to the Woodlands Senior Citizen Center, Columbia City. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home
