Lewis Leavell Coats was the eldest son of 'Lovie' Jeffersonia Elizabeth Davidson and John Bussey Coats. Lewis had four siblings – Eva May Coats Lindsey, Fred Haden Coats, Janestine Coats Haralson, and John McRae Coats. He married first Clyde Jones Spearman on September 10, 1913, in Water Valley, Yalobusha County, Mississippi. Clyde was the daughter Anna Jones and Thomas Spearman of Yalobusha County, Mississippi. They had two sons, Lewis Leavell Coats, Jr. and Thomas Spearman Coats. Lewis married second, Celia Carroll on May 29, 1920 in Jefferson Parish Louisiana. They had three children, Barbara Coats Arnberg, Beverly Kathryn Coats Patterson, and John Bussey Coats. From his children, Lewis had sixteen grandchildren. Betty, Lewis Leavell, III, Nancy, Cathleen, Thomas, Janestine, Carol, John, Beth, and David Coats, Jeffrey, Steven, Greg, and Drew Arnberg, Trisha and Gary Patterson.
