Born in Springwells, Michigan, he was best known as one of the eight Chicago White Sox players permanently ineligible for professional baseball for his alleged participation in the Black Sox scandal in the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. Nicknamed "Knuckles", he was a right handed pitcher making his debut with the Detroit Tigers on September 3, 1905. For fourteen seasons, he played with the Detroit Tigers in 1905, Boston Red Sox (1906-12) and Chicago White Sox (1913-20). He ended his career with 209 wins, 148 loss, 249 complete games, 35 shutouts, 24 saves, 1374 strikeouts and a 2.38 earned run average. After being banned from playing baseball he was a strawberry farmer until his death at 84 in Livonia, Michigan. In the film "Eight Men Out" (1988), about the Black Sox scandal, Cicotte was portrayed by actor David Strathairn.
