Angeline Block, 98, a resident of Pierz, MN, died Jan. 6, 2002, at the Pierz Villa in Pierz.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 10 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Gerald Dalseth officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Angeline Block was born Aug. 28, 1903, in the small town of Leofield in the Province of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada. She was the ninth child born to the late Joseph and Otillia (Duerr) Merkling. She had seven brothers and five sisters. Her family moved to St. Michael in 1916 when she was 13 years old. Angeline was united in marriage to Herman H. Block Feb. 18, 1924, at Immaculate Conception Chuch in Minneapolis. Together they farmed near Buckman until 1952. She worked at a sewing factory in St. Paul until 1956. The couple moved to Onamia where they built the "Flying a Cafe." In 1964 they built a home in Pierz. Angeline did upholstery at her home in Pierz until 1986. She took residence at the Harmony House in Pierz in 1992 and then later resided at the Pierz Villa.

Angeline is survived by one son, Rolland Block and wife Lea Marie of Pierz; two daughters, Verena Otremba and husband Albert of Pierz and Elaine Grittner and husband Edward of Pierz; one sister, Freda Krueger of Pierz; 21 grandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; 43 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman; one son, Donald; parents; brothers, Domonic, George, Frank, Leo, Dan, William and Jacob Merkling; sisters, Catherine Otten, Lena Bistedeau, Otillia Preimesberger and Louise Gelhar; four granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.

Casketbearers were Timothy Koshenina, James and Donald Grittner, Steve Poster, Scott Schaefer and James Kane.
