KITTS HILL — James J. Cales, 87, of Kitts Hill, went to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky.

The Portsmouth native was born April 12, 1920, the son of the late Owen Perry and Mary Agnes Davidson Cales.

Mr. Cales was a graduate of Ironton High School, Class of 1938. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran, serving during WWII. He was owner and operator of Cales Service Station in Ironton, retiring in 1982. He was of the Apostolic faith and lived most of his life in Lawrence County.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosetta Ainsworth Cales, who passed away July 24, 1995; four brothers, Darrell O. Cales, Walter "Speed" Cales, William Cales and Robert Cales; and a sister, Gladys Alberta Cales.

He is survived by three daughter and two sons-in-law, Patricia June Lancaster of Wheelersburg, Jackie and Mike Roush of Kitts Hill, and Becky and Pete Hall of Kinsman; a son, James J. Cales, Jr. Kitts Hill; eight grandchildren, James Lee Thompson II of Mansfield, Angela Dawn Large of Coal Grove, Robert Richardson of Coal Grove, Misti Richmond of Hubbard, Jay E. Hall of Kinsman, Jason Aaron Cales of Coal Grove, and Shawn and Jason Roush of Ironton; 19 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Powell of Gahanna, and Katherine Arthur of Ironton.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home with Pastor Robert E. Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery in South Shore, Ky. Military graveside rites will be conducted by VFW 8850. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. To offer condolences to the family or view Mr. Cales video tribute,
