John William Bybee was born in Moniteau County, Missouri
and later moved to Benton County, Missouri
with his father. John was a solder in the
Civil War and at the close of the war he
married Betty Hinshaw. To this union
came ten children were born and two died
in infancy. John was a farmer the early part
of his married life. Later he was traveling
Salesman for Dr. Vaughn and Oscar Davis.
He was also a member of the Masonic Order
with the degree of a Shriner.

John Bybee was a tall man and he always wore
a hat and suit with a vest that had pockets
. He always carried a pocket watch in his
vest pocket. He had no transportation he
walked to all of his customers in and near
Climax Spring, Edwards, Noby, Warsaw, Dell,
Fristo, Fairfield, Cross Timbers, Preston,
Urbana, and Jordon, Missouri, in the Ozarks
about three times a year. All of the area
he traveled had dirt roads. His customers
were friends and relatives that lived
between these towns and in town. He sold
jewelry, knives, scissors, medicine, such
as Indian herb roots, pills salve, liniment
and many other items. He always had a cane
in one hand and an old time Dr. grip in
the other hand to carry his stock. Every one
always looked for John Bybee to come by so
they could buy some Grandpa Bybee's pills
