Mabel was the seventh of ten children of John Cummins Reid and Catherine B. Davidson Reid. The family immigrated from Aberdeen, Scotland to Dell Rapids in 1883.

They moved to Lambertville, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey in 1895. Mabel worked in a rubber mill in her youth.

Mabel married Russell Cyrenas Slack about 1911.

She resided in Bayonne, Hudson Co., New Jersey all of her married life. After her husband's death, Mabel went to live with her sister Grace in New Hope, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.
