He was born November 30, 1916 in Oakland, California, to Anne Danielsen and Earl Pearce. Elwood attended Oakland Technical High School, where he lettered in football all four years and served as student body president. Upon graduation, he earned a scholarship for football at Stanford University, but instead attended and played football at S.F. City College.
In 1941 he married Charlotte Campi and joined the Navy to serve in WWII. He worked for the Shell Oil Company for 17 years after which he, Charlotte, and the family moved to Lake Tahoe in 1956.
Elwood owned and operated Pearce's Shell Station at the "Y". He served as President of the Lion's Club and was active in St. Theresa's Catholic Church. Elwood resided in Gardnerville for the last 24 years. For a brief time he drove the Meals-on-Wheels bus and helped with St. Gall's rummage sales.
He was an avid fly fisherman in the Hope Valley area where he knew every stream and fishing hole. Topaz was also a favorite haunt. Above all, Elwood was a gregarious, warm person and a wonderful father.
Elwood was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte, in February 2003; both parents; his sister, Margery; and brother, Jack.
Surviving are sons: Woody and Joseph Pearce; daughter, Carole Michelsen; grandchildren, Cheri Thornton, of Elko, Tony Pearce, of Gardnerville, Molly Daysh, of Folsom, CA, Matthew Makley, of Phoenix, AZ, Luke and Michelle Michelsen, of Smith Valley, Corrine and Owen Pearce, of Alexandria, VA; and great-grandchildren,:Jeffrey and Steven Pearce, of Gardnerville, and Mikiah and Alijah Makley, of Phoenix, AZ.
