Jack Oliver Banta
Ponca City, Okla. - Jack Oliver Banta, Ponca City, died at 11:40 p.m. Saturday in St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. He had been in failing health since September 1978.
He was born July 9, 1917 at Crane, Ore., to Mr. and Mrs. Harry O. Banta. In 1920 he moved with his parents to the Dilworth Community, where he received his education.
He joined the Blackwell National Guard when mobilized in September 1940, serving for one year. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on Sept. 17, 1941 in Oklahoma City. In April 1942 he was sent to England, serving in the 15th Bomb Group, later in the 44th Bomb Group, as an aerial gunner. He flew 35 missions out of England and the Middle East, finishing his tour of duty on Aug. 1, 1943.
He returned to the United States and in December 1943 returned to England, serving until June 1945. He had been awarded the Distinguished Unit Badge and one bronze oak leaf cluster, the Distinguished Flying Cross with one bronze oak leaf cluster; and the Air Force Medal with three bronze oak leaf clusters.
He received his discharge as a staff sargent on Sept. 4, 1945 at Camp Chaffee, Ark. Following his discharge he moved to Arkansas City where he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad company for a short time before joining the Crude Pipeline Company.
He married Clara A Field on April 12, 1947 at Gutherie, Okla. They established their first home in Arkansas City. He joined Continential Oil Company in 1951, moving to Ponca City in 1953. He was with the Solvent Treatment Unit at the time of his retirement, which was April 1, 1977, due to ill health.
He was a member of the Sunset Baptist Church of Ponca City, Huff-Minor Post #14, American Legion, VFW and the OCAW Union.
Survivors include; his wife of the home, 944 Riveria Drive; two sons, Richard E. of Arlington, Tex., and Robert S. of Stillwater, Okla.; two brothers, Delbert O. and John O., both of Wichita; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Sunset Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Highfill officiating. Interment to be in the Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel.
A memorial has been established in his name to the Cancer Fund.
The family will be at the family home in Ponca City.
