You were one of the few Vice Presidents who became friendly to the man who was your President. You even were able to advise President Taft. And you were rewarded. In 1912 you became the first Vice President to be renominated with the same President for re-election since Daniel D. Tompkins had done that in 1820 with James Monroe. Unfortunately you died before the election of "Bright's Disease" - only a week before the election. Technically educator Nicholas Murray Butler was running with Taft on Election Day, but your name was still on the ballot. And Taft and you were defeated by Wilson and Thomas Marshall. You were known to your friends as "Sunny Jim". You sound like a very likeable man, Mr. Sherman. I hope you are at peace.
