Egerton became a farmer in Randolph and was a Captain in the Army and the Vermont militia during the War of 1812. He volunteered for duty in Plattsburgh during the British invasion, and commanded a company that was raised in Randolph. He later served as served Adjutant of a regiment. Egerton served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1825 to 1826 and was a Delegate to the 1827 Vermont constitutional convention. From 1830 to 1833 he was Randolph's Town Clerk. He was elected Lieutenant Governor as an Antimason and served from 1831 to 1835. In the early 1830s Egerton was responsible for designing and supervising construction of the second Vermont State House. He served in the Vermont Senate from 1837 to 1839. His Randolph Center home still stands and is a privately owned residence.
