His first marriage was to Mary E. Smulling. They had eight children: Mary Ann, Margaret, James Arthur, Mildred, Francis Catherine, William Henry, Benjamin, and Anna Belle.
Later, Joseph married Sarah Jane Parrish. They, too, had eight children: Emma Lillian, Nellie Pearl, Joseph Richard, Lula May, Rosa Alice, Eddie, Alpha, and George Lawrence.
Joseph was a veteren of the Civil War and was a farmer by trade.
