In an old St. Ambrose burial record, Mr. Barnes was listed as being in the G.A.R. I checked in Ancestry, and saw that he was registered for a Civil War pension by Margaret Barnes and that he had been in B3 Wis. Inf. regiment. Her application was made 3/13/1874 as an invalid and widow on 12/27/1886. Then I found a Civil War Soldiers Record showing he'd enlisted 1/22/1864 as a private. He mustered out 5/13/1865.
