Born in Cambridge, MA he was the son of the late Edward Florence and Josephine (Galvin) McCarthy-Nadau and stepson of the late John Nadau. He attended Phoenix Lawrence Grammar School, North Junior High School and St. Mary Parish High School in Waltham, MA before enrolling at Mount Carmel Junior Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ont., to study for the priesthood in the Carmelite Order. He professed his first vows in August 1945 at the Carmelite Novitiate in New Baltimore, PA., and took the religious name of Florian. He continued at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where he received his M.A. degree in sociology in 1948, and began theology studies at Whitefriars Hall in Washington, professing his vows there in September 1948. Ordained in 1951 at the Scapular Church in 1951 in New York, he began his first apostolate as teacher at Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, was later assigned to Salpointe High School in Tucson, AZ for six years. He spent two years teaching at Joliet Catholic High School in Joliet, IL., and 11 years in Lima, Peru. In 1973, Rev. Florian returned to the U.S. and worked on his doctorate at Arizona State University. Receiving his degree in 1976, he returned to Salpointe High School. After a year sabbatical in Madrid, Spain, he worked at various parishes in Arizona before retiring in 1999 and moving to Florida.
