Corene A. Birchler, 89, Carmi, formerly of Terre Haute, Ind., died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 at Wabash Christian Retirement Center in Carmi.

She was born Aug. 31, 1918 in Ridgway to William Walton and Margaret Zirkelbach Walton. Her husband, Paul Birchler, whom she married on March 29, 1948 in Evansville, Ind., preceded her in death.

Paul and Corene lived in Chicago until retirement. In 1984, they relocated to Terre Haute, Ind. to be closer to family. Corene was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Terre Haute, Ind. When her health began to fail, she moved to Illinois to be closer to her family. Corene enjoyed each and everyday of her life. She loved playing bingo and trying her luck with instant lottery tickets.

Survivors include three sisters, her twin, Irene Dolan of McLeansboro, and Bernice Sisk and Marian Poetz, both of St. Louis, Mo. Corene had no children, but she was loved by several nieces and nephews, including Margaret Aydt of Dahlgren, John R. Biggerstaff of Enfield, Carolyn Clark of Carmi, Carl Biggerstaff of Loganville, Ga., Cindy Russell of Enfield, Mary Blankenship of Valier, Anita Wargel of Ridgway and Adolph DeGrauwe Jr. of Dyers, Ind. Corene also had a special friend and neighbor, Laika Hartfiel of Terre Haute.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother and five sisters. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Prayers will begin at 9:20 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time) Saturday in Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th St., Terre Haute, Ind., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. (EST) in St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1807 Poplar St., Terre Haute, Father Rick Ginther officiating.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. (EST) Friday in the funeral home, with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. (EST).

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Wabash Christian Retirement Center Memory Unit, 216 College Blvd., Carmi, IL 62821.
