Susan Alice Garrett was born in Mississippi, the daughter of Jonathan Joshua and Mary (Grantham) Garrett. In 1875, she married Charles Hudson Chesteen in Mississippi. They would have eight children, but only four of them would reach maturity. By 1880, Susan and Hudson had their first two children and had a farm in Montgomery County, Mississippi. They had the rest of their children in the following decade, but on May 2, 1890, at age 33, Susan died after giving birth to twins, in Montgomery County.
