Wife Finds Body Of Husband in Wreckage of Car
She Begins Search When He Fails to Return From Work

After a premonition that her husband had been involved in an accident, Mrs. Courtland Walker Pullen, 1748 East Base Line, Highland, started searching for him early yesterday and found his body crushed in the wreckage of his automobile on Arrow boulevard just west of Fontana. Mrs. Pullen became alarmed when her husband failed to return home from work about 1 a.m., borrowed a car from a neighbor, and started a methodical search of highways leading to the Kaiser steel plant where Pullen had been employed as a welder. She found the wrecked car at 6 a.m. smashed against a tree on the southwest corner of Arrow boulevard and Locust street. Mr. Pullen, 52 years old, had been instantly killed, said P. H. Evans, deputy of Coroner R.E. Williams, The driver had either fallen asleep or a mechanical defect caused the car to swerve from the road, Mr. Evans said.
ON SWING SHIFT
Mr. Pullen had been working the swing shift at the steel plant and Mrs. Pullen said he always telephoned her whenever he had to work overtime. He left the steel mill shortly after midnight. Mrs. Pullen called the sheriff's office when her husband failed to arrive home, and after learning no accident had been reported, started her search. Dozens of cars had probably passed the intersection where Mr. Pullen's car was wrecked, but the impact had swung the car to one side and passersby apparently believed the car was parked by the tree, Deputy Coroner Evans said The engine of the car was shoved back into the driver's seat by the force of the impact and Mr. Pullen was thrown against the dash board. He suffered a fractured skull, a crushed chest, both legs were broken and his left arm was fractured.
FUNERAL TOMORROW
Mr. Pullen, who formerly lived in Pomona, had been employed at the Kaiser plant three months. He had lived in Highland one year. Mr. Pullen was a member of the Pomona Adventist church and of the International Association of Machinists. In addition to his widow, Inez, Mr. Pullen is survived by a son, Raymond, of Los Angeles, and a daughter, Zoe Pullen, Highland.
