Ernestine Renn Boyce, 98, of Westminster Canterbury and formerly of Portsmouth, died July 27, 2007, in Virginia Beach. Mrs. Boyce, a native of Portsmouth, was the widow of Clinton Charles Boyce and a daughter of the late Sally Cato Hawks and William Ernest Renn. She was born Aug. 16, 1908. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and the College of William and Mary, she taught at Cradock and Churchland high schools until her marriage. She was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church and its Walter Gum Class. An avid gardener, she was a past president of the Elizabeth River Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Ernestine Renn Boyce; her twin brothers, William Ernest Renn Jr. and Richard Hawks Renn. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, among them Laura Renn Burnham of Suffolk, Kate Renn Shepard, Lynn Boyce Brennan, both of Charlotte, N.C., Henrietta Bell of Norfolk, William E. Renn III of Virginia Beach, Elizabeth Renn Gee of Wellsboro, Pa., Joan Boyce of Greensboro, N.C., and Barry Boyce of North Carolina; several loving cousins, Connie Hawks Broecker, Mary Welton Meredith both of Virginia Beach, Juliet Hawks of Portsmouth and Charlotte Hawks of Carrollton, Va.; sister-in-law, Aileen Renn of Virginia Beach; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
A graveside funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. Robert E. Friend Jr. There will be no scheduled viewing and visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Monumental United Methodist Church, 450 Dinwiddie St., Portsmouth, VA 23704 or to the American Cancer Society, 4416 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23452. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling the arrangements.
