Columbus Franklin Gunnels, age 77, died following a short illiness, Saturday evening at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Margaret Hambey in the Hall District. Mr. Gunnels was a native of MO and came to Watsonville from San Juan Bautista 2 weeks ago. For 25 years he was in charge of Highway maintenance for San Benito County and wa affiliated with the State department of Highways for 15 years until his retirement a few years ago.
During the past 48 years he has been a member of the San Juan IOOF Lodge and was known in San Benito County as "deacon". He is survived by 3 daughters, Mrs. Ardell McFall of Salinas; Mrs. Clara Wharton of Pacific Grove; and Mrs. Margarte Hambey of the Hall District 5 greandchidlren and 3 great grand children.
