On May 26, 1861, Josiah IV was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the service of the Confederacy, Company K, 10th Regiment (Artillery), North Carolina Troops. Paroled at Greensboro, NC, 26 April 1865. Detailed as state ordnance officer attached to NC Adjutant General's Office in Raleigh, June 1861. William A. Graham noted that he held this position until the end of the war.
