According to the 1838 widow's pension application of his widow, he served during the Revolutionary War. Following is an excerpt from that application describing his service: "That she is the widow of Jonathan Chaffee late of said Wilbraham dec'd, who was a Private in the Revolutionary Army and served as follows, viz. It appears by a journal kept by him, some of the first leaves of which are lost that he was at East Hoosack (now Adams) Mass on the sixteenth of August Seventeen hundred & seventy six on his march from his home in Wilbraham to Ticonderoga in a company of which Charles Colton was Captain & Noah Warriner Lieutenant belonging to the regiment of which Ruggles Woodbridge was Colonel. How long before then he enlisted or commenced his march does not appear. It appears further by this journal that on the twenty sixth day of November following he had orders to be ready & started home on the next morning at day break thus showing that he must have served during that tour at least three months and ten days exclusive of the time consumed previous to his arrival at East Hoosack and in the return home. This service was performed at Ticonderoga. By a paper in his hand writing bearing date Nov 8th in which are stated names of both officers and soldiers in the company to which he belonged & which is herunto annexed it appears that Moses Bliss resently a resident of Springfield in said County a pensioner and

the Act of June 7 1832 now transferred to the New York agency was a soldier in the same company."

"At a subsequent time, precisely when is not known to the declarant, the said Jonathan went to White Plains as a substitute for his brother Asa Chaffee who was drafted among others to fill up Col. Sheldons regiment of the Connecticut Troops, where he served four months as a light horse man. The names of the officers of the Company during this tour are not known. It is believed that one Leighton or Layton was a Corporal in the company."
"She further declares that she was married to the said Jonathan Chaffee at Somers, Conn on the seventeenth day of October seventeen hundred & eighty two by the Rev. Mr. Backus & that her husband the aforesaid Jonathan died on the twenty fourth day of July eighteen hundred & eighteen " . . .
