Petty Officer First Class Daugherty of Barstow, Calif., was student of the month at Barstow High School in June 1997 with a 3.5 grade-point average. After graduating in 1997, he attended Barstow Community College for two years and then enlisted. He wanted to see the world and he did. He loved the Navy. He loved everything about it and was just proud to do his job. Steve served as a cryptologist. His previous duties included Naval Security Group Activity in Norfolk, and recently transferred to a tactical communications unit with the special warfare community. He lived in Virginia Beach and is survived by a son. His awards include the Joint Service Achievement Medal, Combat Action ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Navy ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment ribbon and Good Conduct Medal (2 awards). He was also an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist. Steve died as a result of enemy action while conducting combat operations in the vicinity of Baghdad, Iraq at age 28.
