Cinematographer. He was a Hollywood cinematographer who pioneered the rich, glossy "MGM look" of motion pictures he filmed for the company. With this look, inexpensive B movies had a better appearance than any other movies. When he was age 17, he had the opportunity to see the making of a football-inspired film on the Cornell University campus, which led to his interest in cameras and moviemaking. His best-known films are "Babes in Arms" and "Funny Face." He had a long career spanning the 1910s thru the 1950s. His experience as a cameraman in the Army Signal Corps in World War I was instrumental to his success in Hollywood.
