John Thomas is the son of Brinkley and Elizabeth McMullen Bishop. He had 4 brothers and 6 sisters. They are:

Sarah Ann "Sallie" Bishop 1826 – 1880
Lucy Myhand Bishop 1829 – 1888
Elizabeth F. "Eliza" Bishop 1832 – 1905
Joseph J Bishop 1832 – 1869
Letitia M "Lettie" Bishop 1834 – 1919
Wiley Brinkley Bishop 1836 – 1916
Mary Jane Bishop 1837 – 1919
Ann Anna Bishop 1841 –
George Leonard Bishop 1843 – 1916

John enlisted with the Confederacy and served in Co. D, Pannel's Tennessee Brigade during the Civil War. After the war, he married his brother's widow, Avarilla Haseltine Bowles Bishop, 25 Dec 1869 in Dennken, Montana. They moved to Johnson County, TX as did several of the Bishop family members, where they lived out their lives. They raised her children with first husband and John's brother - Joseph J. Bishop. They are:
