Poet. Born in Villahermosa, Tabasco, he was one of the first modern writers heavily active in the promotion of Mexican art and literature. He studied in Mexico City, lectured in modern poetry at the National University of Mexico and served as the director of the Department of Fine Arts. His early poems such as “Colors in the Sea” (1921) and “Stone of Sacrifice” (1924) depicted his many moods as he saw the world. His later works of verse explored the historical and spiritual implications of his experience with nature. In 1976, he was elected as a representative to the Senate of Mexico.
