He was born Feb. 9, 1917, in the Richland community.
He was a retired farmer and milk truck driver.
Survivors include a son, Larry Dale Bates; and a daughter, Gail Keener.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church in Portales. Burial will follow at the Mount Zion Cemetery.
