Musician. She was a concert pianist, organist, author and teacher most noted as co-writer with her sister Patty Smith Hill of the familiar tune "Happy Birthday to You." She also was a student of her father, Calvin Cody and Adolp Wedig. Louisville, Kentuky native Mildred Jane Hill along with her sister orginally composed what later became known as "Happy Birthday to You" as a classroom greeting. It was first published in 1893 as "Good Morning to All" with the lyrics later amended in 1924 after Hill's death to include a stanza begining "Happy Birthday to You." She died in Chicago, Illinois on June 5, 1916. Mildred Jane Hill and Patty Smith were posthumosly inducted in the The Songwriter's Hall of Fame on June 12, 1996. In 1988, Birch Tree Group, LTD. sold the rights of Happy Birthday to you along with all its other assets, to Warner Communications for an estimated $25 millon. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, "Happy Birthday to You" and "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" are among the three most popular songs in the English language.
