Dick was born on December 2, 1935, in San Angelo, TX to James Joseph and Margaret (Waring) Russell. He attended high school in San Angelo TX, and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in finance from Texas Tech University, in Lubbock TX where he was an active member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Shortly after graduation he was united in the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony with Julia Reed. Together they spent a life raising Black Angus cattle and Quarter Horses in Montana and New Mexico. Though he dearly loved his ranches and his cows, his true devotion was to his faith and his family, of which his friends were always a part. Dick was always a devout Roman Catholic, a good man, and a loving father. His involvement in the Cursillo movement in San Angelo TX always had a lasting influence upon him. Dick was an outgoing individual that had never met a stranger, and so was not only involved in agricultural organizations, but was also very active in political issues and the Republican Party.
