It was with sincere sorrow that the many friends of Mrs. Charlie Gaskamp, aged 83 years, 2 months, and 26 days, of the Womack community on Route 1, Clifton, learned of her death at her home at 10:30 o'clock on Sunday morning, July 26. Mrs. Gaskamp, who suffered with a heart condition, had been in ill health for several years prior to her demise. Funeral services for Mrs. Gaskamp were held on Tuesday afternoon, July 28, at 2:30 o'clock at the family home and at 3:00 o'clock at the Zion United Church of Christ at Womack and were conducted by Douglas Schneider, student supply pastor of the church. During the services members of the church choir sang "Take Thou My Hand And Lead Me" and "Jesus Still Lead On" and were accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Edwin Conrad. Pallbearers were five of her grandsons, Herman Hennig, of Waco, Melvin Hennig, of Robinson, and Calvert Hennig, John Hennig, and Raymond Zuehlke, of Clifton, and a grandson-in-law, Joe Glenn Rice, of Waco. Interment followed in Clifton Memorial Park.
Obituary follows: A daughter of the late Wilhelm Kettler and Mrs. Sophie Schutter Kettler, Mrs. Henriette Kettler Gaskamp was born in Westfalen, Germany, on April 30, 1876. She attended school in Germany and was baptized into the Lutheran faith in infancy and later was confirmed in that faith on April 20, 1890, both ceremonies taking place in the country of her birth. It was at the age of 18 years--in 1894--that Mrs. Gaskamp came to the United States and first settled in Washington County. She continued to make her home there until several years following her marriage to Charles Gaskamp on December 8, 1898, at the Zionsville Lutheran Church near Brenham. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Gaskamp farmed in Washington County until 1906, at which time they moved to a farm in Coryell County. It was in 1912 that they purchased their place in the Womack community near Clifton, where they have since resided. Their place is located just north of the former Womack School property. Mrs. Gaskamp was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family and her church were her main interests. For many years, she had been unable to engage in other activities as she was bothered with hay fever and asthma to a great extent. Mr. and Mrs. Gaskamp had the privilege of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary with an open house in their home near Clifton on December 8, 1948. At the time of her demise they had been married 60 years. Left to survive Mrs. Gaskamp are her husband, Charles Gaskamp, and two sons, Willie Gaskamp and Bennie Gaskamp, of Clifton; five daughters, Mrs. Bill Hennig (Lena), Mrs. Rich Hennig, Jr. (Sophie), Mrs. Harold Spitzer (Mary), and Mrs. Herman G. Zuehlke (Ella), of Clifton, and Mrs. Arnold Spitzer (Clara) of Houston; 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Members of Mrs. Gaskamp's family have the most heartfelt sympathy of everyone in their great loss.
