US Congressman. In 1973 he was elected as a Democrat from Massachusetts to the US House of Representatives, and served in the eleven succeeding Congresses through 1997. Studds was the first openly gay person elected to Congress and a strong advocate of gay rights. He was also the ranking member of the House Democratic leadership that supported New England fishermen and the ocean environment. After retiring from public office, he worked as executive director of the New Bedford Oceanarium. He died after sustaining head injuries from an accident.
