Audrey Charlotte Pierce Coffey was born July 3, 1919, in Iowa City, the daughter of John A. and Nellie E. (Frentress) Pierce. She graduated from Iowa City High School in 1937 and from the former Irish Business College. On February 22, 1941, she married her devoted husband, Donald W. Coffey, at Belle Fourche, SD, where Donald was stationed at Fort Meade prior to being sent to combat in France during WWII. Donald died March 30, 1998.
After Audrey's children were grown, she was employed at the University of Iowa Personnel Department, and later at the Iowa City Press-Citizen and the Daily Iowan newspapers. She was a seventy-year member of First United Methodist Church in Iowa City, where she was a long-time member of United Methodist Women, serving as a circle leader.
Audrey's family left to cherish her memory includes her daughter, Barbara Ann Coffey of Iowa City; sons, Jon William Coffey of Iowa City, and Steven Charles Coffey and his wife, Kathryn of Kennebunk, Maine; grandchildren, Caroline, Sarah, and Matthew. Audrey's family wishes to thank Dr. Zeitler, Dr. Maves, and the highly capable and compassionate staff at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, for their wonderful care of our mother during this her final illness. Also deserving special gratitude is a dear friend and caregiver, Alice Wade of Coralville.
