William was the seventh of ten children. When he was eight years old (1790), his family moved to Wilkes County, GA. In 1804, William moved to Kentucky to become a Methodist minister and was ordained on September 16, 1805 by Bishop Francis Asbury. He was then appointed to the Licking Co, Ohio District in the Western Conference of the Methodist Church.
At the age of 25, he married Priscilla Duvall on Aug 28, 1807 in Rushville, Fairfield County, Ohio. They returned to Georgia in 1809, settling in Jackson County where they remained until moving to Gilmer County in early 1834. Along with other Methodists in the area they began worship under a brush arbor; their first sermon was preached by William Ellington. In August of 1834, the first Cartecay Methodist Church was built on the property of Lewis D.
