During the Civil War he was a Private in Company A, Corps of Cadets (Battalion) during the Battle of New Market, 5/15/1864.
Upon graduation he became Asst. Professor of Mineralogy, Latin & Tacitics at VMI.
He later became a Cotton Broker in Texarkana, TX. and a Farmer in Arkansas, where he married Jennie Smith of Hope, Ark. Together they raised a family of 4: John Bryant Butler, Mollie Butler (Sugg), Lucy Butler (Philips), Charleigh Butler.
