SPOKANE Eva M. Batten, a Palouse, Wash., homemaker and cook, died Friday evening at Sacred Heart Medical Center at Spokane of causes related to age. She was 88.



She was born Oct. 6, 1903, at Winfield, Kan., to Marvin E. and Ellen Fisher Denning. The family moved to Palouse in 1913. She attended schools in Kansas and Palouse, graduating from high school in 1922.

She then worked as a telephone operator in Palouse and also for Williamson's department store there.

She married William J. Batten May 5, 1924, at Spokane. The couple made their home at Palouse.

She worked as a bookkeeper for several years for Conoco Distributors at Palouse.

Besides being a homemaker, she worked as a cook for several years at the Student Union Building on the University of Idaho campus at Moscow and at Pullman Memorial Hospital. She retired from cooking in 1968.

A member of the Palouse Christian Church, she was a past noble grand of the Easter Rebekah Lodge at Palouse.

She enjoyed reading and playing cribbage.

Survivors include a son, Donald Batten of Olympia; four daughters, Helen Rau of Otis, Ore., Mae Allan of Clarkston, and Dorothy and Carol Styer, both of Palouse; two sisters, Ruth Underwood and Wilma Rockwood, both of Walla Walla; 24 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981, a son, William J. Batten, Jr., and four brothers, Ellison Denning, Glenn Denning, Clell Denning and Jack Denning.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Greenwood Cemetery at Palouse. The Rev. Brad Saffell of the Palouse Church of the Nazarene will officiate.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Garfield-Palouse High School Music Department, in care of Garfield-Palouse High School, Palouse, Wash.

Kramer Funeral Home at Palouse is in charge of arrangements.
