Pioneer Doctor & Politician. A graduate of the Maine Medical School at Bowdoin College, Nichols travelled to California to join is his Uncle in Sacramento. After establishing himself, he joined the Democratic party and in 1858, was elected as Mayor of Sacramento. In 1867, Nichols would be elected to the position of the California Secretary of State, a position he held until 1871. Under this position, Nichols would be given the honor of placing the golden ball on the roof of the newly constructed state capitol building. Throughout his life, he would hold numerous other city and state positions such as State Prison Director and Secretary of the State Board of Health.
