Walter died in 1917 when his right lung suffered lobar-pneumonia emphysema. He mostly likely contracted it from disease and poor medicines from when he was serving. Lobar-pneumonia emphysema is when the lung becomes infected and causes a build up of pus in the plural space, which is a cavity in between the lung and chest wall. It only becomes emphysema when the lung fails to respond to medication in a straightforward way. One of the only treatments is by having the pus and fluids drained with a needle. There is a rare chance that it can be coughed out and the person survives. The exact time was 4:35 AM and happened at the base hospital at camp Bowie outside Fort Worth. Another possible factor is that it was spread from the thousands of soldiers training at the same time.
