U.S. Congressman. Successful in mechanical pursuits, he also was employed as a master block maker for the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1857. He was a member of the board of aldermen and supervisor of New York City (1863 to 1864), and he was also supervisor of New York County in 1864. In 1867, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses, serving until 1871. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the New York State Senate (1874 to 1878) and president of the National Democratic Club (1894 to 1910).
