Born in Germany, he enlisted on March 27, 1876, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at age 23, by Lieutenant Thomas Gregg, giving his previous occupation as baker. During the 1876 Sioux Expedition by the 7th Cavalry, he was on detached duty at the Yellowstone Depot in Wyoming, and missed the Battle of the Little Big Horn, in which 60 percent of his unit was killed. He had blue eyes, light brown hair, a fair complexion, and was 5 feet, 8 1/4 inches tall. His last name was also spelled as Katzenmis, Katzmeir, and Katzenmaier.
