Miss Emma Barnes, who has been working in South Bend, was called home this morning on account of the dangerous illness of her father.

~~

James Barnes, north-east of town, was thought to be dying for two hours last night with chronic stomach trouble. Dr. Glazebrook was with him all night and thinks him somewhat better this morning, though he is still in bad condition.

Both articles published in the Starke County Democrat (Knox, IN), on March 15, 1900 (the day he died.)

James Barnes, whose dangerous illness was noted in last week's Democrat, died at his home north-east of Knox at 6 o'clock last Thursday evening, of stomach trouble from which he had suffered for nearly twenty years. Mr. Barnes hauled corn to Knox Tuesday of last week. He caught cold and was not well Wednesday, but was up and about the house all day. Between 12 and 1 o'clock that night, or rather Thursday morning, he was taken with excruciating pains in the stomach and chest which continued several hours. Under the influence of medicine he slept from 8 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Thursday. He then roused up for a few minutes, fell asleep again and after a half hour passed into that long sleep that knows no waking. James Barnes was born at New Lexington, Ohio, Aug. 26, 1842, being 57 years, 6 months and 19 days old at the time of his death. He served in an Ohio regiment during the rebellion. He has been a resident of this county for a number of years. A widow, the daughter of Thomas Harden and wife, two sons and four daughters survive him. The children are all here except the oldest, a married daughter by a former wife, who lives in Ohio. Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 o'clock at Oak Grove school house by Elder A. Pittman of Milford, followed by burial at the Oak Grove cemetery.

Obituary published in the Starke County Democrat (Knox, IN), on Thursday, March 22, 1900, pg. 1.
