The death of Mrs Helen Virginia Spencer occurred on Saturday night September 3, at her home, 12 north Sixth street. She was 79 years of age and had long been a resident of this city. The funeral will take place from the family residence to-morrow morning at 10 o’clock, with interment in Greenbush Cemetery. Rev F C Coolbaugh will officiate. Blessed are the thoughts of the transient sleep and the heavenly waking that come to us as we think of the place prepared in shady Greenbush, near the mother, husband and children, for Helen Virginia Spencer. For her the grave had no terrors, her life was but a preparation for the life beyond. Her characteristic traits were self-sacrificing devotion to her children, a transparent truthfulness, a playful humor and her trust in the merits of Christ. In all her sickness and trouble underneath her were the everlasting arms and up borne by them passed peacefully away. She was born in Baltimore, Md.., December 2, 1819, and her early life was spent there. She came to Lafayette in 1847 as the wife of Israel Spencer, united with the Second Presbyterian church and was a devout and consistent member. She was the mother of six children three of whom, Mary C, Frank W and Guilford L survive. To them goes out the sympathy of the entire community. Theirs is the sure hope of a meeting and recognition beyond the grave.
