The most celebrated actress of the Restoration stage, who was originally a protege of the Earl of Rochester but spent almost her entire career as the lead actress of Thomas Betterton's (qv)company. The playwright Thomas Otway (qv), in whose plays she appeared, nursed an unrequited love for her. She retired to Acton in 1709 and was buried there.
